What is PPE?

Personal Protective Equipment, commonly called "PPE", is equipment worn to minimise exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses. These injuries and conditions may result from contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards.

Personal protective equipment may include gloves, safety glasses and shoes, earplugs or muffs, hard hats, respirators, coveralls, vests and full-body suits.

Importance and legal requirements for PPE

Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 , Part 2 Chapter 3 covers Use of Personal Protective Equipment at work:

“Every employer shall ensure that suitable personal protective equipment is provided to his employees who may be exposed to a risk to their health or safety while at work except where and to the extent that such risk has been adequately controlled by other means which are equally or more effective.”

Therefore, where an employer has undertaken a risk assessment and determined that PPE is required, they must ensure that suitable PPE is provided to workers.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is an essential range of items to wear to protect against various hazardous conditions. PPE is necessary because it prepares for health and safety risks and gives extra protection in the event of an accident or against the elements.
